2020 has been an emotional roller coaster of a year and we're only halfway through. It's hard not to get bogged down in fear and uncertainty when every time you turn on the news or open social media, you're bombarded by bad news, heartache, scary statistics, and hatred. Now more than ever, people need an escape - something to make them smile and laugh, feel hopeful, and help them forget the real world for a little while. For me, that escape has always been books, and lately, it's been romantic comedies in particular.

I wanted to share eight of the 2020 rom-coms I read and loved in the first half of the year. All of these were laugh-out-loud funny, clever, swoony, and full of feels. If you're a rom-com fan or if you're new to these types of books and looking for somewhere to start, you can't go wrong with any of these. And if you're looking for even more recommendations, be sure to check out my bookstagram where I share book recs daily!

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall
Published: July 7th, 2020 by Sourcebooks Casablanca

Wanted:
One (fake) boyfriend
Practically perfect in every way

Luc O'Donnell is tangentially--and reluctantly--famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he's never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.

But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that's when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don't ever want to let them go.

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
Published: June 23rd, 2020 by Avon

Danika Brown knows what she wants: professional success, academic renown, and an occasional roll in the hay to relieve all that career-driven tension. But romance? Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt. Romantic partners, whatever their gender, are a distraction at best and a drain at worst. So Dani asks the universe for the perfect friend-with-benefits—someone who knows the score and knows their way around the bedroom.

When brooding security guard Zafir Ansari rescues Dani from a workplace fire drill gone wrong, it’s an obvious sign: PhD student Dani and ex-rugby player Zaf are destined to sleep together. But before she can explain that fact, a video of the heroic rescue goes viral. Now half the internet is shipping #DrRugbae—and Zaf is begging Dani to play along. Turns out, his sports charity for kids could really use the publicity. Lying to help children? Who on earth would refuse?

Dani’s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zaf’s secretly a hopeless romantic—and he’s determined to corrupt Dani’s stone-cold realism. Before long, he’s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his... um, thighs.

Suddenly, the easy lay Dani dreamed of is more complex than her thesis. Has her wish backfired? Is her focus being tested? Or is the universe just waiting for her to take a hint?

Beach Read by Emily Henry
Published: May 19th, 2020 by Berkley

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They're polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

The Blind Date Diaries by Brenda St John Brown
Published: January 15th, 2020, self-published

Dating? Lower than a bikini wax on my list of priorities.

Blind dating? Let’s just say I’d rather have a Brazilian - and not the hot soccer-player variety.

So the fact I’ve agreed to do a blind-date feature for Pink, the magazine I work for, and write it all up Bridget Jones style means one thing - Pink is in dire straits and this is my best shot at saving my job.

Make that my only shot because date number one is with Jack Reese – the son of the publisher of Pink – and he dislikes me as much as I dislike him.

Or at least I thought he did.

Today is the Mondayest Monday ever. Hallie Winstone has been fired – and it wasn’t even her fault!

Having lost her job and humiliated herself in front of a whole restaurant full of diners, this is absolutely, one hundred percent, the worst day of her life.

That is until she receives an email announcing that she is the lucky winner of the Once Upon a Page Bookshop!

Owning a bookshop has always been Hallie’s dream, and when she starts to find secret love letters on the first pages of every book, she knows she's stumbled across something special.

Things get even better when she meets gorgeous, bookish Dimitri and between them, they post a few of the hidden messages online, reuniting people who thought they were lost forever.

I always say that Jaimie Admans’ stories are like sunshine in book form, and The Little Bookshop of Love Stories is no different. This book is sweet, laugh-out-loud funny, romantic, and just an overall delight. The world feels like it’s going to hell in a handbasket at the moment, and this book was a much-needed escape. I started giggling on the first page, and I had a giant, goofy grin on my face almost the entire time I was reading.

Hallie can’t seem to win; she has terrible luck and she’s clumsy to boot. But her luck changes suddenly when she wins - yes, wins - her favourite local bookshop. The store is in dire need of updating and organizing, and its finances are in pretty rough shape, but Hallie’s book-loving heart is happy, and she’s determined to turn the shop around. I loved Hallie’s perseverance, humour, and creativity. It’s always been a secret dream of mine to own a bookstore, and this book made me feel like I was right there with Hallie, helping her make improvements in the shop and figuring out how to make it succeed.

Then there’s Dimitri...ahh, Dimitri. *heart eyes* Jaimie always writes the best heroes; they’re sweet and swoony and aren’t afraid to show their softer, more vulnerable side, which is such a refreshing change from the oh-so-popular alpha-hole trend. Dimitri was adorable, quirky, and smart, and his sensitivity and kindness made me long to hug him as often as Hallie wanted to. I loved that these two found kindred spirits in each other; they were two misunderstood book lovers who were both clumsy and had bad luck, who found comfort and companionship in each other and lit each other up. Their banter made me giggle and grin, and I swooned so hard as they began falling for each other.

The Little Bookshop of Love Stories
is like a love letter to books. I have no doubt Hallie and Dimitri’s deep love of books will both charm and resonate with fellow book lovers. If you’re looking to get swept up in a magical, whimsical romance, look no further. Be prepared to fall head over heels (or arse over tit!) in love with The Little Bookshop of Love Stories.

Have you read The Little Bookshop of Love Stories? What did you think? Do you have any favourite books about books - ones that feature book lovers, bookstores, libraries, book clubs, etc?

All she wants for Christmas…

Leah Griffiths has woken up after a few too many glasses of Prosecco with a hangover – and discovers she’s accidentally bought a little Christmas tree farm in Scotland!

At first she’s horrified, but perhaps it’s the perfect way to forget all about her cheating ex.

And when she meets grumpy (but ridiculously gorgeous) pumpkin farmer Noel underneath the mistletoe, Leah begins to believe that at Christmas time, anything can happen…

Jaimie Admans has done it again! I don’t know how each of her books is more amazing than the last, but they are. Snowflakes at the Little Christmas Tree Farm was charming, funny, and romantic - a total delight.

I loved Leah and Noel and found them both really relatable. I completely understood Leah’s desire to take a huge leap and change things up. I thought she was equal parts brave and crazy (in the best way possible!) for moving her entire life from London to Scotland to follow a dream that involved something she actually knew nothing about - Christmas tree farming. I have to admit grumpy heroes aren’t typically my thing, but I sensed right from the beginning there were deep layers beneath Noel’s initial attitude toward Leah. He proved himself again and again, and he ended up being the sweetest, most sensitive, squishiest cinnamon roll of a man underneath that grumpiness, and I absolutely adored him. I always love Jaimie’s men, but Noel might just be my new favourite!

Dear Hallmark, please get on making a movie of this wonderful book. It has all the ingredients of a holiday classic - strong main characters, hilarious and quirky side characters, a beautiful setting, a swoony romance, and even an adorable dog with lots of personality. I’d love to see these characters brought to life on the screen. Until then, they’ll live on in a special place in my heart, along with all the characters from Jaimie’s previous books.

One night will change their lives forever…
Georgia Bailey is closing up her little charity shop in Oakbarrow when she gets a mysterious late night call from a stranger, threatening to jump off the town’s bridge.

Something about the man’s voice is faintly familiar but all she can do is stay on the line and after talking for hours, losing sense of time passing, coax him back from the edge.
The next morning, Georgia walks to work, buys a festive latte from Leo (who she’s had a crush on for months!) at the local coffee shop, and is shocked when she suddenly recognizes the voice from last night…

A heartwarming festive love story that reminds us that even in the darkest of times, hope is always just around the corner!

Jaimie Admans’ books are always a joy to read. They’re fun and funny and always have a magical quality and something about them that makes them feel different from anything else I’ve read.

It’s a Wonderful Night had that magical quality I’ve come to love in Jaimie’s books, but the thing that really set it apart was something completely unexpected: the fact it dealt with mental illness. Honestly, take a moment to let that sink in: a romantic comedy that deals with mental illness. I love romcoms and have read many of them, most of which are light, fluffy, feel-good stories. An escape from reality. When you think of those things, you don’t associate them with mental health issues, right? But that’s one of the things that sets It’s a Wonderful Night apart and makes it a must read. Jaimie Admans struck the perfect balance between fun and funny romcom and serious, true-to-life, relatable issues.

As someone who has battled with depression since her teens, I’m always on the look-out for books that depict mental illness in not only a realistic way, but a sensitive and thoughtful way, and Jaimie did that. Having that not only in a romantic comedy, but one centred about the holidays, was brilliant. It’s important to talk about mental health all the time, but I think it’s especially important around the holidays because they can be difficult for many people.

“We shouldn’t be acting like mental health is something to be ashamed of. It affects everyone. No one is immune. Everyone is fighting a battle that we know nothing about.”

While some people see the holidays as the most wonderful time of the year and revel in the festivities, for others it can be absolutely miserable. For many people, the happiness of the holidays and getting together with friends and relatives can be exhausting. They feel they have to pretend to be happy because that’s what people expect. Or they see everyone else’s successes - jobs, travel, relationships, children, wealth - and it only shines a light on their shortcomings and failures. Many people also have complicated relationships with their families for a variety of reasons, and since the holidays are generally a time for family gatherings, it can bring on a lot of anxiety and stir up old resentments. Then there are the people who are either alone for the holidays, or feel alone...and the ones who have lost loved ones and the holidays are a reminder of what they’ve lost. Then there are the expectations that come with the season - financially, emotionally, timewise. There are so many reasons the holidays can be a difficult, painful time, and a lot of people bottle it up, put on a smile and a good show of holiday spirit, and meanwhile they’re spending money they don’t have, exhausting themselves with draining interactions, and feeling worse by the day.

This book shone a spotlight on those complicated Christmas + depression emotions. It didn’t make light of it and it didn’t sensationalize it. It didn’t make it seem like there was a magic cure for depression or that simply ‘getting in the holiday spirit’ would fix anything. Georgia reminded Leo that no matter how bad things get, they can get better and there are things - and people - worth sticking around for. She reminded him about the good things in life and that he matters. He’s important. Life is worth living. It was a beautiful, heartfelt message that rang so true for me and really spoke to me on a deep level.

“Sometimes the people who smile the widest are the ones who are suffering the most.”

The book wasn’t solely about Leo’s struggles with depression, though. It was also a story about friendship, community, and pursuing your dreams. It was sweet and heartwarming and hopeful. And romantic! I’ve found a new book boyfriend and his name is Leo. He was a perfect example of someone hiding behind a mask - always smiling, kind and generous, but hurting inside. He would do anything for anyone, and put himself last until Georgia came along and showed him how valued he was. I absolutely adored Leo and Georgia, and all the other Oakbarrow residents. These characters leapt off the pages and felt so real. I didn’t want this book to end, and it’s been a long time since I’ve felt that while reading a book. I could picture it all so clearly...which made me realize this would make a wonderful movie. Get on it, Hallmark!

If you’re looking for a sweet, funny, heartwarming read this holiday season - or any time of the year - I hope you’ll pick up a copy of It’s a Wonderful Night. It’s not only a beautiful festive read, it’s also a reminder that even in the worst of times, there’s still hope, and you’re not alone.

Are the holidays a fun time for you or do you find them stressful and emotional? Or maybe, like me, you feel a combination of both? Do you have any favourite books that deal with mental health issues?
