A to Z Challenge Day 24: X-ray vision and other super powers

I love characters that have some sort of supernatural or magical ability.  I guess that's why I enjoy fantasy so much, the possibilities are endless.  You can create someone with the ability to do anything that suits the character or the story.  There's just something about people who can wield such power - manipulating fire, water, ice, weather, changing shape and form, disguising themselves, casting a glamor, abilities like speed, stealth, flying, etc.

X-ray vision wouldn't be my first choice for a super power - not for myself anyway.  I'm sure it would come in handy, but it just doesn't appeal all that much to me.  If I could have any super power, it would be the ability to fly.  I've always wanted to fly - I used to dream of it all the time as a kid, and even now every once in awhile, I'll take flight in my dreams.  Anyone know enough about dream interpretation to tell me what that means?  Probably a desire for freedom or adventure in my case.

I've also always liked the idea of having the ability to make myself invisible.  It's kind of ironic really because I've spent a lot of my life feeling invisible in a negative way - people overlook me because I'm quiet and shy, I'm not beautiful or thin or any of the other things that always got my friends noticed when we were growing up.  But feeling invisible and having the ability to make yourself invisible to suit your purposes are two different things.  I'm a shameless eavesdropper - it's the writer in me.  I get ideas for stories, dialogue, character traits and all kinds of other things by listening to people's conversations.  One of the things I find myself saying often is 'I wish I could be a fly on the wall when...'  I'd love to see behind-the-scenes stuff that no one else sees - see what certain people do in their down time, how people interact with others when you don't get to see them with people very often, things like that.  There's this guy I know who doesn't talk much, but I can tell he's really observant just from little things he does, and he's become so much of a mystery to me, to the point that I often find myself wondering what he's like at home.  Is he always quiet, is he talkative only with certain people, is he actually really wild and crazy but just puts on a quiet, demure act for the public?  Not only am I fascinated by him, there's a lot of potential for story characters there.  I love to know what makes people tick, and being invisible would come in handy for studying people.  For instance, I'd love to know what Prince William and Kate Middleton are doing right now, with their wedding coming up tomorrow.  I'd settle for Harry Potter's invisibility cloak.

What would your super power be if you could have one?  Have you ever created a character with super powers?

  1. I'd have to agree with flying or else super-jet speed like the Mom in "No Ordinary Family". She jets all over the place and then gets to eat carbs, carbs, and more carbs, because she burns so much energy (I am a carbaholic). I am a very impatient person and hate the time it takes to get from point A to point B. Bring on the super-jet speed for this gal!

  2. Yes, X-ray vision would not be on my list of desirable superpowers--seriously, who wants to see everyone without their clothing? Or have anyone out there with that ability? Although, it does make me laugh (as a fat, old person) whenever the poor airport folks have to watch when I walk through that scanner. I figure it serves them right. ;)

  3. I think my supper power would have to be the ability to absorb others powers. This is a cool power as seen in HEROES.

  4. invisibilty would be the best super power to have. at least 1/2 a dozen times I day, I think I'd like to be a fly on the wall
