Top Ten Fave Books I’ve Read During the Lifespan of My Blog

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

It's been a really long time since I participated in Top Ten Tuesday. In fact, I don't think I've done one all this year - crazy! This one was really hard to do, because I've read and loved a ton of books in the year and however many months that I've been blogging. I managed to narrow it down though, and here's my top ten for today.

Top Ten Favourite Books I’ve Read During the Lifespan of My Blog

Paris! Anna. Etienne. Canadian flag pin. Movies. Sleeping alone in the dorm. Humor. Romance. Did I mention Paris? What’s not to love?

Touching, funny, emotional, worthy of the ‘epic’ in its title. I’ve always wanted to take a cross-country road trip, and this book had my wanderlust itching as I fell in love with Amy, Roger, and all the secondary characters.

Lyrical writing, unique storyline, beautiful love story.

Riveting, exciting, romantic, brilliantly unique.

Another story that got my wanderlust going. I connected so much with Bria, fell in love with Rowan, and felt like I was right there with them as they explored and learned and grew.

Another fantastically unique concept, totally different from other dystopians, which often feel like the same old recycled story with new characters. Brilliant characters, beautiful writing - overall amazing book.

A dark and gritty retelling of Little Red Riding Hood...with werewolves. Incredible.

When I read Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen, I was barely in my mid-teens and I couldn’t imagine loving one of her books more. It was my story - it felt like she’d written it just for me, but I think I loved Along for the Ride at least as much. There’s a reason why Sarah Dessen is known as the YA contemp queen, and it’s because of books like Along for the Ride.

I’d been looking for a truly amazing faerie book, and I found it with The Iron King. Enchanting, romantic, exciting, funny - it had a bit of everything with a healthy dose of fae lore (I love all things fae).

Incredibly emotional, beautifully written, poignant.

I fell in love with the characters in each of these books - I was able to relate to the female leads, and I swooned over the guys (seriously...every single one of these books has at least one swoonworthy boy...I'm all about the romance and swoonworthy boys!). Even though it's been a long time since I read a few of these, I still think about them often.

What are some of your favourite books that you've read in the lifespan of your blog? Have you read any of the books from my list? Be sure to leave a comment or a link, and I'll visit you in return!

Book Review: Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce

Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce
Series: Fairytale Retellings #1
Published: June 7th, 2010
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
324 pages (hardcover)
Genre: YA paranormal romance
Acquired this book: From the library
Warning: may include spoilers

Synopsis: Scarlett March lives to hunt the Fenris--the werewolves that took her eye when she was defending her sister Rosie from a brutal attack. Armed with a razor-sharp hatchet and blood-red cloak, Scarlett is an expert at luring and slaying the wolves. She's determined to protect other young girls from a grisly death, and her raging heart will not rest until every single wolf is dead.
Rosie March once felt her bond with her sister was unbreakable. Owing Scarlett her life, Rosie hunts ferociously alongside her. But even as more girls' bodies pile up in the city and the Fenris seem to be gaining power, Rosie dreams of a life beyond the wolves. She finds herself drawn to Silas, a young woodsman who is deadly with an ax and Scarlett's only friend-but does loving him mean betraying her sister and all that they've worked for?

What I thought of Sisters Red:
Sisters Red is like a sick, twisted version of Little Red Riding Hood. I don’t often read darker stories – it’s not that I don’t enjoy them, it just sort of works out that way. This story was dark, disturbing, had its nasty moments, but all of that made the story. The action and tension had me on the edge of my seat, constantly wondering what was going to happen. I’m an incredibly slow reader, but I zoomed through this book, especially the last quarter or so, because I couldn’t stand not knowing what was going to happen (if you’ve read this book, see spoiler at the end of the review to see what I’m talking about).

This story was so unique, and the characters were terrific. Scarlett is scarred and damaged in more ways than one. She’s a girl on a mission, and nothing and no one is going to stand in her way or stop her.

Rosie wants to assert her independence and show that she’s strong enough to fight on her own. She wants to have a life outside of hunting, but feels that she owes her sister her life because Scarlett protected her from the wolf that killed their grandmother. She struggles with guilt and a desire to have a life beyond the hunt.

I loved the romance in this book. Silas is just incredible. I appreciated that he and Rosie didn’t get together right away, and they don’t go into it lightly. It wasn’t an instant romance, so it was fun to watch it build, feel the tension between them, and wish they would hurry up and just be together!

This book really had a bit of everything - action, romance, suspense. I can't wait to read Sweetly!

SPOILER ALERT - highlight black part to read spoiler: I was about halfway through this book when I went to update my status on GoodReads and accidentally saw something someone had written as a comment on a review for this book, and it led me to believe that someone dies. I panicked. I loved the characters, and didn’t want any of them to die, but kept creating these scenarios in my head. When I figured out that Silas was the Potential, and then it was revealed, I was so sure he was the one who was going to die, and I felt sick. It would have to be either Rosie or Scarlett who killed him, and I honestly almost stopped reading because I didn’t think I could handle it - I loved him so much! I thought the death might even be Rosie or Scarlett - that one of them would be killed be a Fenris, or that Silas would change and kill one of them. I thought it might be one of those books where someone dies for the greater good, or because it ‘has to’ happen for the story to progress. There was part of me that thought ‘no, they’ll figure it out, there’ll be some twist’, but after reading what I thought was a spoiler, I just couldn’t see how it was going to happen! Did anyone else who read this think one of the characters was going to die?

Waiting on Wednesday (8) & WWW Wednesday (18)

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine and is meant to showcase upcoming releases that we're eagerly awaiting. This week I'm waiting on...

Flirting in Italian by Lauren Henderson
Expected publication: June 12th, 2012

Synopsis: Four girls. One magical, and possibly dangerous Italian summer. Family mysteries, ancient castles, long hot nights of dancing under the stars . . . and, of course, plenty of gorgeous Italian boys!

The synopsis doesn't give us much to go on, but it sounds cute and I love the cover. I can't believe I have to wait 8 months to read this! In the meantime, I guess I'll have to pick up some of Lauren Henderson's other books.

What are you waiting on this week?

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading.  All you have to do is answer these 3 questions:

1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you'll read next?

Simple right?  I love to read and love to know what other people are reading!

What are you currently reading? Right now, I'm reading a paperback and an ebook. The paperback is Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill, and the ebook is Farsighted by Emlyn Chand. I'm not very far into the first book, but I'm about 1/4 of the way through Farsighted, and enjoying it.

What did you recently finish reading? Last week, I read Being Human by Patricia Lynne (I have a giveaway going on for a signed copy - the link is at the top of the blog), Hearts at Stake by Alyxandra Harvey, and Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce. I'll have the review up for Sisters Red either later today or tomorrow.

What do you think you'll read next? Well, since I'm still doing the Spooktacular Paranormal Reading Challenge, it'll be something paranormal, and god knows my list is long enough that it won't be hard to choose. I'm thinking maybe Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson.

Waiting on Wednesday (7) & WWW Wednesday (17)

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine and is meant to showcase upcoming releases that we're eagerly awaiting. This week I'm waiting on...

Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood
Expected publication: February 7th, 2012

Synopsis: Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they're witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word . . . especially after she finds her mother's diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family's destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren't safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood—not even from each other.

This book sounds so good! Witches, intrigue, romance - love it!  Plus, I adore the cover, it's so pretty!

In My Mailbox Week 9

In My Mailbox is weekly meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren.  The idea is to share books you've acquired during the week, whether you've won them, bought them, picked them up at the library, received them for review, whatever.  It's a great way to bring attention to books and authors and share the love!

Please pardon my awkwardness in this video…I was having one of those days where I was uncomfortable in my own skin and I think it shows lol…plus, I’ve mentioned it before, but I do not have a lisp, it’s the stupid super-sensitive audio on my camera that makes it sound like I do. *sigh*

Review books:
Cloyne Court by Dodie Katague
Farsighted by Emlyn Chand

Won:
Watching Willow Watts by Talli Roland - thank you Prospera Publishing
