I know a lot of writers. We're an odd bunch, and we all have a different process of writing - some plot and plan, others fly by the seat of their pants, some need music to write to, others need absolute silence, some have endless ideas and inspiration, and others sit and stare at a blank screen for days. We all work differently, but one thing I've found is common among writers is procrastination - wasting time.
It's weird, because writing is what we love to do best, and yet most of us will find any excuse not to write. We need to run errands or clean the office or check Facebook or blog surf. I bet most of us spend more time not writing than we do actually writing. Distractions - often self-imposed ones - seem to be an occupational hazard. I used to feel guilty about it, but now I've just accepted it as part of the writing process. It's how I work. As long as I still get stuff done, what does it really matter if I feel the need to check Facebook and Twitter incessantly, or take some time to relax and read, or play with graphics in PSP?
I've gotten much better over the last year, because I realized how detrimental procrastination could be, and I know quite a few people who use it as an excuse to get absolutely nothing done, and I didn't want to be one of those people. But I still have my moments...or days.

What about you? Are you a procrastinator? How do you waste time?
Blogging :) It's "wasting time" in a productive way!
ReplyDeleteInternet. That's one of my weaknesses. I've gotten better over time, but there's always those moments I just don't feel like getting up so I browse around a bunch of sites and get caught up until it's time to leave for work or go to bed. Also, TV on DVD marathons. Lol. I've been more productive writing wise in the last couple months. I am determined to meet my goal so I kick myself to get moving. :D
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I can waste oodles of time! My best time waster is just chatting with people on twitter or in gchat.
ReplyDeleteIf I could, I'd personally have it all done yesterday. but life won't let you do that, so a lot of things get left to the last minute.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice for W. Sometimes "wasting time", leads to great inspirations!!

That pie chart totally cracked me up! ;)
ReplyDeleteFor your pie chart, you may need to place me squarely in the green part, the one for binge eating...you can specify that to chocolate chip cookies with a helping of french vanilla ice cream even though I'm supposed to be eating better. lol!!
ReplyDeleteProcrastinating? Yeah, we're old friends. We go way back. I have a feeling that with procrastination's help, I'll even be late to my own funeral. lol!!
