5 Tips for Surviving NaNoWriMo

Tomorrow is the first of November and countless writers all over the globe know what that means: National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. The idea of NaNoWriMo is to write 50,000 words during the 30 days of November. It’s stressful, it’s fun, it’s a great way to meet other writers, and if you’re able to knock out 50K words in 30 days, not only do you get bragging rights, you have the beginning of something amazing: a novel.

Because NaNoWriMo is an incredible feat that can leave you feeling drained, there are some important things for participants to keep in mind.

1. Plan ahead. During NaNo (and pretty much any other time you’re dealing with writers) you’ll hear a lot about pantsers vs plotters. Whichever you are and whatever works for you is completely fine. If you’re a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type of writer, it’s good to at least have an idea of what you’re going to write and how you want to start. If you sit down on November 1st with no plan whatsoever, you could potentially waste the first few days of the month trying to decide what to write. At that point, you’re already behind.

2. Don’t edit as you go. This is a good rule of thumb any time, but especially during NaNo when time is precious. Just get the words out, even if they’re not pretty. Many long-time authors will tell you their first drafts are always crappy, even after years and years of writing. That’s okay. There’s no shame in it. If you’re constantly going back and fixing things as you write, it’ll take you much longer to finish. If you realize something needs to be fixed or fleshed out, make a note and deal with it during revisions.

3. Take breaks. Breaks are crucial to your physical and mental health. NaNo can be extremely stressful, and some people are harder on themselves than others. Be sure to take time to eat, drink, and get some form of exercise. If you’re stressed or feeling creatively blocked, find some other way to be creative - photography, colouring, painting, knitting, etc. Try not to think of the breaks you take as ‘wasting time’ - it's necessary to recharge and take care of yourself.

4. Find other NaNoWriMo participants. Put out a call on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook asking for other participants, and follow them on the NaNo site (I’m on there as Marie Landry!). You can join local groups that support each other online or even meet up in person. My local library has an incentive where you can get a free drink from the cafe if you show them your word count on the NaNo site. Making friends with other participants means you can cheer each other on, commiserate, and hold each other accountable. Just remember one thing: everyone writes at a different pace, and it can be easy to get frustrated by comparing yourself to others. Every year, I see someone saying they’ve hit 50k in the first few days or are pumping out 5,000 words or more each day. That’s great, but it’s the exception, not the rule. This ties into my final piece of advice...

5. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Writing 50,000 words in 30 days is hard. It’s mentally draining. Some people are in their element and others flounder or decide it’s too much for them. If you’re overwhelmed or if life simply gets in the way, know it’s okay to slow down or quit if you feel it’s necessary. You’re not in competition with anyone and it’s not the end of the world if you don’t reach 50,000 words.

NaNoWriMo 2015: Update #1

Toward the end of October when I saw everyone talking about NaNoWriMo, I decided to give in and try again. I participated (and ‘won’) in 2012 and 2013, and since I have a few new(ish) projects, I figured I could join the fun (*cough* insanity *cough*) and use the time to really focus on my writing, cheer on other people, and have other people cheer me on.

My NaNoWriMo Projects

I’m doing this in an unconventional way, but words are words, and I figure as long as I hit 50,000 by November 30th, it doesn’t matter how, right? So I’m starting with a short story that’s a follow-up to my book Something in the Air (which comes out next Tuesday!). It’s set around Christmastime in London, and it’s basically reading like a love letter to London, which I'm okay with. ;-)

Once that’s done, I’ll be going back to my NaNoWriMo project from 2012. Heh...yeah. I got to 50,000 words three years ago and abandoned the story because I was so stressed and I thought it sucked (even though it really didn’t). The main character has been nattering away at me for the last few months, so I’m finally going to finish her story. I have a lot of rewriting to do (like changing the story from third person to first, adding in all the details I’ve come up with over the past three years, and changing a few of the plot points). A lot of it will initially be rewriting, but I’ll eventually get to actual writing. This one is a contemporary YA, and it involves a character who’s been seen before in a couple of my books...but that’s all I’m going to say for now! Its working title is ‘Dark Side’ because the main character is worried she has a hidden dark side, like a certain family member of hers, and when I first heard the song Dark Side by Kelly Clarkson, it got stuck in my head and I started referring to the story that way, even though I doubt the title will stick.

Week 1 Word Count
  • November 1st: 2,033
  • November 2nd: 2,345
  • November 3rd: 0
  • November 4th: 0
  • November 5th: 0 - UGH, FAIL!
Total: 4,378
Where I should be: 8,330

What happened?!

Well, it's fairly simple. This week has been CRAZY. With release week for Something in the Air being next week, I have guest posts to write, interview questions to answer, graphics to design, and a million other little things to do. I thought I was caught up and would be able to concentrate on writing, but between that and real life stuff, it wasn't the case. Throw in the fact that early in the week my bff asked if I would come cat/house-sit for her all next week, and I've been scrambling to get stuff done around here, make sure posts are scheduled for next week on Facebook, Twitter, and the blog, plus do a bunch of RL stuff. She lives out of town, and my anxiety will likely prevent me from going out much (or at all) once she's away. She's picking me up on Sunday and she'll be there until Wednesday morning, then gone until Friday night, so I'll be on my own in her apartment for three full days and two nights. But because I'll be on my own for most of the week (she'll be working Monday and Tuesday before leaving Wednesday morning), I'm confident I can get a lot of writing done and catch up to where I should be with my daily numbers and overall goal.

Are you participating in NaNoWriMo 2015? I'd love to cheer you on if you are! Feel free to add me as a buddy. Let's talk here or on Twitter!

November 2013 Recap

November has been a pretty crazy, amazing month. I can't believe how fast it's gone by. It feels like it was just Halloween and now all of a sudden it's the second last day of November. I'm doing this a couple days before the end of the month because I'm leaving on a trip Friday morning, and I've scheduled this post ahead of time. A bunch of friends and I are taking off to New York State to do some Christmas shopping. It's my first time doing Black Friday and I'm terrified. I'm not a big shopper to begin with, I don't like crowds, and I'm not aggressive, but it's the only time everyone else could go so...say a little prayer for me! lol

Here are some of the highlights of November:

I went to the 3rd annual Ontario Blogger Meetup on November 2nd. It was my first time going, and I had a blast. I went with Kathy from I Write, I Read, I Review, and got to meet a bunch of bloggers I've been talking to for years, plus even more bloggers who were new to me. We exchanged books, talked about books, had a great meal, and it was just overall a fantastic, memorable day.

Kathy and me
On November 5th, I released my fourth book, a Christmas novella called The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. I wrote this book last December and waited anxiously for months to finally release it into the world. This story is really special to me, and I hope people will enjoy it.

My sister-in-law, mum, and I took my nephews and niece to have professional pictures done. We were supposed to do family photos but decided last minute just to get pics of the kids done. I've wanted to go to a specific photographer for years, and I finally got to go to her. She was definitely worth the wait - the pictures turned out amazing.

Noah (11), Logan (3), Maddy (5 months)
On November 16th, my sister-in-law and mum told me we were going out for dinner and that it was my brother's surprise birthday party (his 40th birthday was November 26th, my 30th birthday will be December 16th). When we arrived at the restaurant, I was the one surprised - it was a party for me. A bunch of my friends, including my childhood best friend who I hadn't seen all year, were there. After dinner, it was my brother's turn to be surprised - we went to a friend's place and had a surprise birthday party for him. How many siblings get to celebrate their birthdays together? It was pretty special, and a lot of fun.

Top: Me and my mum; my cake (my nickname is Mimi in case you were wondering who Mimi is lol). Middle: The gifts my sister-in-law gave me (a cupcake stand, and a huge set of kitchenware - utensils, knives, measuring cups, etc); me and my brother. Bottom: my childhood best friend and me; everyone (13 in total - my lucky number!).
My sister-in-law and I went to see About Time. I adore Rachel McAdams and anything to do with time travel, so I was really excited about this movie and it lived up to my expectations. It made me laugh and made me cry, and I can't wait until it comes out on DVD so I can watch it over and over. It's from the creators of Notting Hill and Love, Actually, which are two of my all-time favourite movies. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

I also got to see The Day of the Doctor (the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special) in the theatre in 3D (!!!!!). I thought I would miss it entirely because I don't get Space or BBC, and I didn't think it would come to my city, but it did! I preordered tickets, and I ended up getting to watch it on a live stream (thanks to Patricia Lynne) Saturday afternoon. Getting to see it in 3D in a theatre full of Whovians was an incredible experience. I had no idea how many people to expect - I saw a special one day only U2 concert in 3D in the theatre in January and the theatre was only about 1/3 full. When we arrived at the theatre for The Day of the Doctor, there was a huge line-up in front of the auditorium. When we finally got in and got seats, the theatre filled up quickly, and it turned out to be a sold-out show. There were quite a few people dressed up - one girl was wearing a Tardis dress, a guy was dressed as Ten with red and blue 3D glasses, a couple guys were dressed as Eleven, and one guy was dressed as Four (people applauded when he walked into the theatre). Several people had Doctor Who t-shirts on, and even more people seemed to have sonic screwdrivers.

As for the show itself...I was so excited to see that there was a special theatric preview of sorts with Eleven and Ten. Eleven talked about theatre etiquette, and then Ten came on, warning people about how things in 3D were often alarming...like Eleven's chin. *snickers* It was hilarious. PLUS...David Tennant on a giant screen in 3D. *swoons* It was like heaven. I laughed, I cried, and I cheered and clapped along with everyone else at the end. The only thing that sucked was that there was a making-of featurette at the end, but my mum and I had to leave early because we had to catch the last bus. It was either that or pay a fortune in cab fare, and I'm saving every cent for my trip to the States (plus the tickets were pretty expensive to begin with). I'm sure the extras will be on the DVD, but I was bummed because I wanted to see it on the big screen.

It was still an amazing experience, and I'm incredibly grateful to my mum, who has absolutely no interest in Doctor Who, but who went with me because she's the best mother ever.

On my brother's actual birthday, we had a small family party - dinner, cake, and presents. He really appreciated it.

See the cupcake stand? That was one of my early birthday presents from my sister-in-law
And finally, in November I participated in NaNoWriMo for the second year in a row. I 'won' on November 27th, hitting (and surpassing) 50,000 words. My WIP is called After the Storm, and it's a standalone companion novel to my third novel Waiting for the Storm. I still have about 10,000 words to write, but I'm hoping I can finish in the next week or two. You can read a teaser from the book and find the GoodReads link here.

So that was my month in a nutshell. How was your November? What were some of the highlights? If you did a recap, feel free to post the link in the comments!

NaNoWriMo 2013 - Final update

Phew. It’s been one hell of a month, you guys. NaNoWriMo nearly drove me insane last year, and I thought it was going to do the same this year, but I made it. As of yesterday afternoon, I officially ‘won’ NaNoWriMo! When I finished writing for the day, I’d hit 52,755 words. I still have another 10,000 or so words to go, but I’m getting there.

I knew I’d have to be done early since I’ll be out of town the last two days of November. I didn’t think I was going to make it, so I was thrilled and relieved yesterday when I hit 50,000 words.

Curious what I’ve been working on? The book is called After the Storm, and it’s a standalone companion to Waiting for the Storm. It’s told from Ella’s perspective, and it picks up a couple weeks after where Waiting for the Storm left off. Telling Ella's story has been really fun but also really emotional. If you read Waiting for the Storm, you’ll know what a snotty little bitch Ella was. Her whole family dealt with her mother’s death in different ways, and Ella’s way was to basically self-destruct and take her pain out on everyone around her, but especially her sister. Now she has a lot to make up for, and she carries a lot of guilt, self-doubt, and heartache. Her story is about redemption, finding herself, and finding love in its many forms.

It’s already up on GoodReads; you can add it here. I’ll be having a cover reveal soon, and will get the synopsis up on GoodReads once the book is complete. I’m hoping to publish in March or April, but I don’t want to rush it. Once I’m finished writing it (hopefully next month), I plan to work on another Christmas novella to give myself some distance from the story, then start revisions, then go through the process of having beta readers and my editor read it. I want it to be the best it can be before I send it out in the world. I’m really excited for you guys to read it!

That being said…I’m going to do something I don’t think I’ve ever done while I’m in the middle of a project: I’m going to share a teaser. Remember that this is rough and will likely change between now and the final version.

“Did you take it for granted?” The question comes from out of nowhere, slipping past my lips. That seems to be happening a lot lately; like the filter between my brain and mouth is on the fritz. He looks at me strangely, so I clarify. “When you were little, did you realize how lucky you were? To have those days with your dad?”

His expression softens and he tilts his head back and forth. “Maybe. Probably. Does any kid really realize how lucky they are to spend time with their parents? You think they’re invincible and that they’ll live forever. It never occurs to you to make as many memories as possible and then store them away because someday there won’t be any new ones.”

“Exactly.” A flood of Mom-related memories sweeps through my mind like a video on fast forward. I was sixteen when she died, so I’m lucky to have a lot of good memories, but it’s the memories I don’t have that haunt me. The ones I should have started making the second I found out she was sick. The multitude of questions I should have asked her when the doctor told us she was terminal.

And yes, the 'he' in that is Ellas love interest. Hes pretty amazing, if I do say so myself. ;-)

Stay tuned for more about Ella’s story in the weeks and months to come! If you want to stay up to date, be sure to subscribe to the blog via BlogLovin’ or email so you know when I post signups for cover reveals, ARCs, blog tours, etc.

Want to get ready for After the Storm? Even though it's a standalone, it's also a companion, so it might help you to read Waiting for the Storm first.

Charlotte O’Dell knows this summer is going to suck. Her beloved mother just died, her sister hates her, and her dad has completely checked out. Fulfilling her mother’s final wish, the family heads to Angel Island for the summer to stay in a beach house her mother once loved.

After a year of being shut away taking care of her mother, Charlotte is numb and practically afraid of her own shadow; she hopes going to the island will give her the time and space she needs to begin healing, and an opportunity to bring her family back together. When she meets her mysterious neighbor, Ezra, it doesn’t take long for Charlotte to confess the issues she’s developed. Ezra begins giving Charlotte assignments to get over her fears, and although she accepts his tasks, all she really wants is to be with him. When she’s with Ezra, she’s able to forget the hollow ache in her heart and the fact that her family is falling apart. But Ezra has secrets…

Can Charlotte pull what’s left of her family together, mend her broken heart, and allow herself to fall for Ezra? Or is it all just a storm waiting to happen?

NaNoWriMo 2013 - Week 2 Update

The first week of NaNoWriMo was a lot of this:

And there still was an element of that this week, because I think there always will be with me, but I really got to business and was more like this:

One of the great things about NaNoWriMo is that it forces you to write. You know that every day - whether it's at the same time each day, or stolen minutes here and there, or all morning one day and all night the next - you will be writing. Your butt will be in that chair, your fingers will be on that keyboard, and you'll be creating words...and worlds.

Now, as most of you know, this isn't the first book I've written. I've written a dozen or more books in my lifetime (many of which will never see the light of day, but 4 of which are already published). So how is November different from every other month? I guess in a way it's the pressure, which can be a good thing or bad thing. Last year the pressure was bad. I hit 50,000 words but I was so miserable I set that book aside and haven't touched it since. This year, that pressure feels more like motivation. I want to write this story, I want to get my characters' stories told, I want other people to read it and hopefully love it. Last year I let all my insecurities and doubts go to my head and mess with me. There's nothing wrong with the story I started last year - I simply let the pressure weigh me down and make me crazy. I'd like to go back to that story eventually and give it the proper attention it deserves, and finally finish it.

At this point, I'm feeling confident. I like getting into a writing groove and writing every day. I normally try to write every day anyway, but it doesn't always happen. Besides the distractions and the million other things that come with being a self-published author (basically being my own pimp), there are also the weeks or sometimes even months where I'm not writing because I'm doing revisions and editing. I have a love/hate relationship with revisions - a lot of the meat of the story comes out during revisions, but it's time consuming and often frustrating. There comes a point where you just want the story to be done.

So...I'm in a much better head space than I was last week at this time where I falling behind and freaking out. I wrote every single day this week (except Sunday, and now I can't remember why) and had good numbers. Here's a breakdown for anyone who's interested:

November 8th - 3,290
November 9th - 3,281
November 11th - 2,554
November 12th - 2,339
November 13th - 3,100
November 14th - 1,948

I've hit 29,247 words total as of Thursday night. Which means I'm finally ahead, which also means I can do this:

http://gifsoup.com/view/846640/doctor-who-dance.html

But not for long because David Tennant is still telling me:

And I should be writing. So off I go!

Ok, fellow NaNoWriMo'ers. How'd you do this week? Are you feeling pressured or motivated? What do you do to prevent yourself from freaking out? How's your word count? Don't forget to add me as a buddy or chat with me on Twitter

NaNoWriMo 2013 - Week 1 Update

This has been a crazy week. I've been so busy I haven't had much time for writing, which sucks and is seriously stressing me out. As of the time of writing this (8pm Thursday night), I'm at 12,735 words. I know it could be worse, but if I don't manage to write tomorrow (I haven't written the last two days...at all), I'll officially be behind. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

The actual writing I've done has gone fairly well. I like where I'm headed with the story, but I'm not sure there's enough conflict. That's always my problem - conflict. It's the bane of my writerly existence.

So besides being busy, I've been finding every excuse under the sun not to write. So Nathan Fillion is all...

And I'm like OK NATHAN FILLION, LET'S WRITE. But then I don't. I do all the other things.

And then David Tennant is all...

And I'm like I KNOW, DAVID TENNANT, STOP PRESSURING ME with your sexy scowl and hair I want to run my fingers through and...ahem sorry...

So I know I should be writing, and I want to write, but everything else is getting in the way. And this is why I hate NaNoWriMo. THE PRESSURE. I'm already crazy, I shouldn't invite more insanity into my life.

I was going to share a little teaser from my story with you guys today but...yeah, now I'm too lazy and I just want to get off the computer and go eat ice cream. Next week!

Are you participating in NaNoWriMo? Add me as a buddy! Or chat with me on Twitter! Are you feeling the pressure yet? How many words have you written?

To NaNoWriMo or Not to NaNoWriMo

As a lot of you know, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is coming up very soon. I participated for the first time last year and now I’m trying to decide whether to participate again this year.

The thing is…I technically completed the challenge last year - I made it to 50,411 words (50,000 is the goal) - but I ended up hating the book and wanting to kill it with fire. There’s nothing wrong with the book, but I think the pressure went to my head and made me doubt myself. It’s been almost a year and that book is still unfinished. I haven’t touched it since November 29th, 2012, when I hit the goal number and said ‘screw this’ (well, what I actually said was a bit more colourful than that but I feel I should keep this post PG).
I won! I have a shiny badge to prove it! And it only cost me what little sanity I had left!
I can write 2,000 words a day. That’s not usually a problem for me. I can even write every single day - I mean, that is my job after all, I’m a writer. But there’s something about the pressure of writing 50,000 words in 30 days. It’s exciting and terrifying and annoying and maddening and it drove me crazy. It was also awesome to know that a gazillion other people were doing it, and to have people cheering me on. There are a lot of pros and cons to participating, and that’s why I’m so torn.

I have an idea that I’ve been going to start anyway, so I keep telling myself to just do it for NaNoWriMo. I keep telling myself not to let the pressure get to me like it did last year. I keep telling myself it’ll be fun and that I’ll meet some great new people and connect with other writers. I keep telling myself that I’m already batshit crazy (oops, there goes the PG rating of this post), so why not just go for it?

I know the point of NaNoWriMo is to sit your ass down, put your fingers to the keyboard, and just WRITE, get the story out of you in any form, even if it's a complete mess. And I mean this isn't my first rodeo. I know I can write an entire novel in that amount of time - I wrote Waiting for the Storm (which is 60,000+ words) in three weeks last summer (plus, you know, several other full-length novels and novellas). I just need to get my head in the right space. And speaking of that, that's kind of another pro to participating - I've been all over the place lately (literally and otherwise), so this would be the perfect excuse I need to get the words out when I've been a) procrastinating, and b) too busy doing everything BUT write. But then I just thought of another con: I’m going to be out of town for 3-4 days in November…2 of them I’ll be out of the country, and it’s the last two days of the month. GAH! *pulls hair out*

But...I mean, clearly I'm already nuts, so what's a bit more crazy heaped on the pile, right?

Yes! Cake for everyone!
What do you think? Should I give NaNoWriMo another shot? Are you participating? Have you participated in the past?

Update Thursday #12

I got the idea for Update Thursday from the amazingly wonderful Jessica from Thoughts at One in the Morning. Every Thursday, I’ll be posting an update on my reading, writing, what’s going on at the blog, and anything else I think is worth mentioning.

ON THE BLOG
I participated in Kathy Coleman's cover + trailer + prologue reveal for her upcoming novel, Sealer's Promise. Kathy's giving away a book of your choice as part of the reveal, so be sure to enter!

I shared a totally epic book haul in my Stacking the Shelves vlog this week

This week's Music Monday song was Undermine from ABC's Nashville

I shared the very first excerpt from The Game Changer, along with a giveaway for people willing to help me spread the word about the book (via Twitter, Facebook, G+, blogs, etc)

WRITING
I finally finished the final revisions of The Game Changer early this week. My alpha reader is going over it once more before I format it and send it out to reviewers. It’s such a relief to finally have it done, but I wish I had more time for pre-release reviews. It’s alright though, at least it’s done! *phew*

I signed up for NaNoWriMo yesterday (you can add me here if you're participating). A few of my writer friends kept telling me they thought I should do it, and since I’d been planning on starting book #4 soon anyway, I figured why not. I wanted to do it last year, but I was knee-deep in revisions for Blue Sky Days and didn’t have time. I’m really excited about the story I plan to write, and I’m anxious to get started. And extremely nervous, because I'm very self-competitive and when I set a goal, I need to accomplish it.

It’ll also be nice to finally have something to talk about on my author blog. It’s been pretty neglected since I started it, but I figure I’ll start a weekly update on NaNo, and maybe even talk about the story as I write…which will be new for me because I never talk about my writing as I’m working on it, and literally only two people know my plans for book #4. Since this book is going to be very different for me in a lot of ways, maybe my process should be too.

LIFE AND STUFF
My sister-in-law has been sick all week, so I’ve had a break from Logan duty (he’s back today though), which is how I’ve managed to get so much done. I’ve drafted several reviews so I can just schedule them, and I’m going to try to do a bunch more (I’m like 15 reviews behind…I don’t know how that happened), plus a few other posts for November, and a few articles for the site I freelance with so that in November I can concentrate on NaNo and the Scarlet Read-Along.

I started watching Supernatural last week (I got all seven seasons on DVD). I’m six episodes in and loving it. I usually tweet while I watch it, and I’ve had so many people strike up conversations with me over the show, so that’s a fun added bonus.

That's it for me this week. Every time I go on the NaNo site and see that little daily/hourly countdown thingy until November 1st, I want to barf. I'm excited and nervous and just want to get started because this story is yelling in my ear night and day. I'm worried that I won't be lucky enough to be able to write two books back to back in such a short time period - it took me three weeks to write book #3, what are the odds I can write the next book in 4 weeks? That would actually be kind of cool though - book 3 in 3 weeks, book 4 in 4 weeks...hmm....

What's new with you this week?
