Tune in Tuesday Week 8 ~ November Rain

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

November Rain has always been one of my favorite songs. When I was in elementary school, we had school dances for the kids in grade 6, 7, and 8. I remember those dances as clearly as if they were yesterday. There were old standbys at those dances...November Rain was one of them...Always by Bon Jovi was another...Waterfalls by TLC was yet another. A school dance was not complete without those songs.

The video for November Rain is epic, although seriously depressing...but the song is one of those songs that I go through phases where I listen to it over and over. This week is one of those times, so I figured it should be my Tune in Tuesday pick.

"And when your fear subsides and shadows still remain
I know that you can love me when there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness, we still can find a way
Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain"

~November Rain by Guns N' Roses~

Weekly U2 lyric:

"Love makes strange enemies
Makes love where love may please
Soul and its strip tease
Hate brought to its knees
The sky over our head
We can reach it from our bed
If you let me in your heart and out of my head"

~Window in the Skies by U2, from U218 Singles~

Tune in Tuesday Week 7 - The Killers cover U2

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

If you've been to the blog before, you'll probably know that I am a huge U2 fan. I do a U2 lyric for Tune in Tuesday every week at the end of my post. This week, my song of choice comes from the 20th anniversary cover album of U2's Achtung Baby. All the songs on the album are covered by singers/bands like The Killers, Nine Inch Nails, Gavin Friday, Patti Smith, Snow Patrol, and a bunch of others.

Now...I love U2...I also love The Killers (they'll end up on Tune in Tuesday with their own songs one of these days...I've loved them since they were a little-known indie band, and I even saw them the first time they did a concert in Canada). UltraViolet (Light My Way) is one of my favorite U2 songs (I pretty much would have sold my soul to hear them play it live on the 360 tour, but they did Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me instead...which ended up being ok, because Bono stopped right in front of me and waited while my camera had a spaz attack and the picture wouldn't take...yeah, best moment of my life). When I heard about the cover album, I was wary. No one compares to U2 (in my humble opinion), so I didn't think anyone could really do their songs justice.

The Killers' version of UltraViolet was the first song I listened to from the cover album. My first thought was I didn't like the beginning...I love U2's beginning where it comes in all soft and ethereal and Bono's voice is low and sexy, then it's all guitar and bass and drums and pure awesomeness. BUT...a few seconds in, I was like 'ooh, interesting'. It's got this funky bass-heavy beat, and Brandon Flowers' voice is great - he even kind of sounds like Bono for a second in or two parts of the song. It became my obsession song after hearing it, and I had it on replay for hours. Of course, nothing will ever come close to the original, but I really do love this version.

"You bury your treasure
Where it can't be found
But your love is like a secret
That's been passed around
There is a silence that comes to a house
Where no one can sleep
I guess it's the price of love
I knot it's not cheap"

~Ultraviolet (Light My Way) - U2 - from Achtung Baby~

Tune in Tuesday Week 6 - Soundtrack Edition: Rocky Horror Picture Show

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

Well, this is the last week of Soundtrack Edition (I think), and since it's the week before Halloween, I picked a movie that I think is fitting. Unlike many people, I didn't see Rocky Horror Picture Show until I was about 19 or 20. I was in college and it was one of my college best friend's (I'll just call her M) favorite movies. One night, a few of us (including my other college bff - R) were doing this big group project and we were so stressed we were all about to lose it, so M put on Rocky Horror, fast-forwarded it to Time Warp, and we all danced around like lunatics. It was awesome, and one of my favorite memories ever. You might not believe this, but in real life, I'm painfully shy, and I don't normally dance like a maniac except in the privacy of my own bedroom lol.

R and me that Halloween...yes, my hair used to be blond
Anyway, that same year at Halloween, R and I went to a Halloween party at a club and we were on the dance floor when Time Warp came on...so we danced...like lunatics...with everyone watching us and laughing (with, not at us), and then they all joined in. So that song, as random as it is, has a very special place in my heart, as does the movie, because I hardly ever speak to M and R anymore. It's one of those bittersweet memories - it makes me happy and sad at the same time to think about it, because we had so much fun together, and we were so close, but they moved away and left me behind in more ways than one. You expect that from high school, but not so much college, you know? Anyway, I'm getting WAY off track, sorry!

Who wants to do the Time Warp with me??
It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
Put your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insane
Let's do the time warp again
Let's do the time warp again

I love this song, too. I've loved Tim Curry since I was a little girl when I first saw him as Rooster in Annie.  This is...um...just a lil different than Annie though lol

*****
Weekly U2 Lyric:
"October, and the trees are stripped bare of all they wear
What do I care?
October, and kingdoms rise, and kingdoms fall
But you go on and on"
~October by U2 from the album October~

Tune in Tuesday Week 5 - Soundtrack Edition: Rattle and Hum

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

I really can't believe I didn't think of this last week. If you've been coming by for Tune in Tuesday, or if you've read my blog regularly, you'll know I'm a U2 fanatic and will use pretty much any excuse to talk about my favorite band. So how did I not think of Rattle and Hum last week for the first installment of Soundtrack Edition? Talk about falling down on the job.

Anyway, for those of you who don't know, Rattle and Hum is a documentary that U2 did in the late 80s. Rattle and Hum was the album they released between Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, and the band were really getting into American music, experimenting with blues, R&B and a lot of different sounds. This movie shows interviews with the band members, clips from live shows, and great behind-the-scenes stuff that any true fan would probably love to see.

Rattle and Hum the album isn't a favorite for many people - it's not my favorite, but some of my favorite songs are on it, so I listen to it often, and I've watched the movie more times than I can count. One of my favorites off the movie is the live performance for With or Without You. This song is actually from The Joshua Tree, but I love it, and I love this part of the movie...the whole movie is in black and white except for With or Without You, so it's a striking contract. I also like it because Bono's so freaking pretty lol...in this movie, he was the age I am now...ask me how badly I wish I had a time machine. *sigh*

U2 lyric of the week:

"See the sun rise over her skin
She feels like water in my hand

Tune in Tuesday Week 3 - Soundtrack Edition: Labyrinth

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

This week kicks off the Soundtrack Edition of Tune in Tuesday. One of my all-time favorite soundtracks comes from one of my all-time favorite movies, Labyrinth. It used to be that hardly anyone had heard of this movie, but I've been finding more and more people who not only know of, but also love this movie. For those of you who don't know, the movie came out in the 80s, stars Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, and David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King. Sarah is a fanciful girl who lives in a make-believe world, but is forced into the real world by her parents when she has to babysit her baby brother Toby. One dark and stormy night, Sarah calls upon the goblins (innocently, in her mind), to come and take her brother...and they do. She has to go to Goblin City, make her way through the labyrinth to the castle and get her brother back from the Goblin King. She has a lot of trials and mishaps along the way, meets some crazy characters who become her friends...long story short, it's one of the best movies ever with an amazing soundtrack.

The song I chose for today isn't just my favorite song from the movie, it's one of my favorite songs of all time. It's so beautiful, and I love the scene in the movie where Sarah's dreaming that they're at a masquerade and Jareth is singing this song...even at 6 or 7 when I first discovered this movie, I was madly in love with Jareth lol. I think this is probably what started my obsession with masquerade balls (even though the one in the movie is seriously creepy).

As the World Falls Down by David Bowie
From the movie Labyrinth (1986)
This video has a bit of the movie before the song

Favorite lines from this song:
*This is hard because I love pretty much every line in this song*

"There's such a fooled heart
Beating so fast in search of new dreams
A love that will last within your heart
I'll place the moon within your heart"

"I'll paint you mornings of gold
I'll spin you Valentine evenings
Though we're strangers til now
We're choosing the path between the stars
I'll leave my love between the stars"

*****
U2 lyric of the week:

"You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you"

~All I Want is You by U2, from Rattle and Hum~

Tune in Tuesday Week 3

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

I’m thinking of doing a theme and highlighting indie music (indie writer talking indie music? hmm), but that might change. And since I’m not exactly up on current music, some of the bands might have once been indie, but aren’t currently. These days, I don't exactly listen to much other than U2, and I figured I probably shouldn't choose U2 songs every week lol.

No Canadian indie bands this week. I know, I know, I'm sure you're all heartbroken. But, this week, I'm doing a tribute song of sorts.
Yesterday would have been my dad's 67th birthday. He died 17 years ago, just three months shy of his 50th birthday. A lot of my memories of him are fuzzy because I was only 10 when he died, and for the last two years of his life, he was in and out of hospitals, deathly ill, and I blocked out a lot of it. One thing I do remember is this song, which came out in 1992. We loved this song - I had no idea what it was about, of course, all I knew was that it was Daddy and Marie's song and we always sang along and danced to it whenever we heard it. So, Daddy, this is for you...
Walking on Broken Glass by Annie Lennox
~For Arsene Landry September 26th, 1944 - June 27th, 1994~
I love this video. Between this and the movie Labyrinth, I'm pretty sure that's what started my obsession with masquerades and costume balls.
Favorite lines from this song:
"The sun's still shining in the big blue sky
But it don't mean nothing to me
Oh, let the rain come down
Let the wind blow through me"

"Now every one of us was made to suffer
Every one of us was made to weep
But we've been hurting one another
And now the pain has cut too deep
So take me from the wreckage
Save me from the blast
Lift me up and take me back
Don't let me keep on walking on broken glass"
*****
My weekly U2 lyric:
"Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees, the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heaven's white rose
The doors you open, I just can't close
Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around your gypsy heart
Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around, and don't look back
Come on now love, don't you look back"
~Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses by U2, from Achtung Baby~

Tune in Tuesday Week 2

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

These days, I don't exactly listen to much other than U2, and I figured I probably shouldn't choose U2 songs every week lol.
Another Canadian indie band this week...

This week's featured song:
Ready to Start by Arcade Fire
This is just audio of the song
Favorite lines from this song:
"Now you're knocking at my door
Saying please come out with us tonight
But I would rather be alone
Than pretend I feel alright"

"If I was scared, I would
And if I was pure, you know I would
And if I was yours, but I'm not
Now I'm ready to start"

"I would rather be wrong
Than live in the shadows of your song"
My personal story behind this choice: I LOVE Arcade Fire. You might know them better as 'that band at last year's Grammy Awards who seemingly came out of nowhere, surprised everyone, and won Album of the Year'. Well, I was one of the people jumping up and down in my living room, yelling excitedly at my TV.
The same friend who introduced me to last week's feature, Pilot Speed, introduced me to Arcade Fire about 6 or 7 years ago. Not too long after I became familiar with their music, I got to see them open for U2 in Ottawa in November 2005. They were freaking amazing. I really, really hope to have the chance to see them live again someday.
Their album entitled Funeral remains my favorite because it was the first one I was introduced to, and I listened to it endlessly, especially before and after I saw them live. And even though I have a few favorites from that album, I chose Ready to Start from their newest album The Suburbs because it's one of my current obsession songs that once I play it, I have to play it over and over. Side note: I heard somewhere years ago that playing a song over and over is a sign of insanity. I must be certifiable then, because I've done that my entire life lol. Anyway, I hope you love this song as much as I do!
Check out the Arcade Fire website to learn more about the band.
*****
My weekly U2 lyric:
"Of science and the human heart
There is no limit
There is no failure here, sweetheart
Just when you quit
I am you and you are mine
Love makes nonsense of space
And time will disappear
Love and logic keep us clear
Reason is on our side, love"

Tune in Tuesday Week 1

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger at GReads that showcases music.  Music for me is right up there with reading and writing, so even though this particular meme isn't about reading and writing, I thought it would be a fun one to participate in. If you're interested in participating, be sure to check out Ginger's blog so you can spread your love of music!

And since I’m not exactly up on current music, some of the bands might have once been indie, but aren’t currently. These days, I don't exactly listen to much other than U2, and I figured I probably shouldn't choose U2 songs every week lol.

This week's featured song:
Turn the Lights on by Pilot Speed (formerly known as Pilate)
This isn't an actual video, it's just the audio, but it was all I could find

Favorite lines from this song:

"Show me a writer with a sad, sad song
Who lived his pain, just stayed too long"

"Show me the lover who when all seems lost
Makes lost to his grief, careless of the cost"

"Been awhile since I was on trial
For the course my life has run"

My personal story behind this choice: About 5 years ago, my friend Meghan, who introduced me to Pilate, as they were known back then, was obsessed with the band and traveled around to a ton of their shows. I ended up loving their music too, so she took me to 2 of their shows. Because she saw them so often, she actually got to know the guys, so I got to meet them, and got all their autographs. Pretty cool. They are incredible live. And did I mention they're a Canadian band? Gotta love that.

I honestly couldn’t tell you what they’re up to these days, but I love their album Sell Control For Life’s Speed, which was renamed Into the West around the time they went from being Pilate to Pilot Speed – something to do with breaking into the American market. *shrug* I love, love, love all the songs on that album, but my favorite is Turn the Lights On.

I hope you'll check them out and enjoy their music as much as I do!

And because I can't talk music without mentioning U2, I'm going to end with a favorite U2 lyric. :-)

"Every artist is a cannibal
Every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration
And sing about the grief"

~The Fly - U2 - from Achtung Baby~
