Spotlight: Now You Can See by Jessica L Tate

Tomorrow is publication day for Jessica L Tate's debut poetry compilation, Now You Can See. Full disclosure: I'm not normally a big fan of poetry (with a few exceptions, including Maya Angelou, who I was obsessed with in high school), but because Jessica (also known as Jessica Sankiewicz) is a friend of mine as well as my critique partner, I was happy to read Now You Can See, and was very pleasantly surprised. As a whole, it tells a poignant story of a young woman experiencing love, heartbreak, anger, confusion, and ultimately acceptance.

Read on to find out more about Now You Can See.

Author Jessica Sankiewicz makes her poetry debut with a compilation of poems from her twentieth year. Now You Can See tells the story of a young woman caught between two worlds and her journey to reach some sort of clarity.

Thoughts and Daydreams #2: Blogging & Reading Slumps

Thoughts and Daydreams is a monthly feature hosted by yours truly and Jessica from Thoughts at One in the Morning. Every month, we'll discuss a reading- or writing-related topic.
~Check out January's post about getting back to reading and blogging basics.~

Welcome to the second Thoughts and Daydreams discussion post! This month, Jess and I are talking about blogging and reading slumps. I think we've probably all experienced one or both at some point, and let's face it: they suck.  There are several reasons they happen, but there are also ways to beat them.

Why do slumps happen?
  • Being busy or stressed in real life. Sometimes you're just so busy you don't have time to read or blog and it slides down your list of priorities.
  • Similarly, other interests might take over. You might get invested (read: obsessed) in a new TV show, or interested in a new hobby, or the weather might be so nice you'd rather be outside enjoying it.
  • Reading hangover. Sometimes you read a book that's so amazing, everything else seems like crap in comparison and it's hard to get interested in other books.
  • On the flip side of that, sometimes reading a crappy book can cause a slump. If I've read a particularly meh book or a few meh books in a row, I find my reading slowing down and maybe even going into a full-blown slump.
  • Feeling overwhelmed. A lot of us take on way too much - too many review books, too many blitzes and blog tours and events and challenges. It can get to a point where it feels daunting and affects your blogging or reading.

How can you beat a slump?
  • Do something else you enjoy. If you don't feel like reading, try rewatching a few favourite movies or TV shows. Colour. Grab your camera and take some pictures. Write something non-blog-related. Talk to other members of the community and rekindle your love of reading or blogging, or talk about your other interests, fandoms, etc.
  • Read a book simply for pleasure. If you're overwhelmed with review books, pick a book off your shelf that you've been wanting to read for ages. And if you really want to take the stress off, maybe you decide not to review that particular book. It can be just for you.
  • Get organized. If part of the reason for a blogging slump is because you're stressed, find ways to de-stress. Make a monthly blogging calendar. Schedule posts ahead. Cut back on memes or blitzes. Don't request or accept as many ARCs. Basically, cut yourself some slack. You don't need to blog seven days a week or even every weekday. Find a schedule that works for you.
  • Take a hiatus. If you're in a blogging or reading slump and nothing is working, take a hiatus. You can simply disappear for awhile, but I'd suggest writing a post for your blog saying you need a break and will  back in a week, two weeks, a month, or however long it takes. I've seen a lot of bloggers take blog breaks, but mention that they'll still be around on Twitter, Instagram, etc., so if you don't want to lose touch with people, be sure to share your links so people can find you elsewhere. Most of all: don't feel guilty. Everyone needs a break from time to time.

What usually causes a reading or blogging slump for you? How long was your longest slump? What are your best suggestions for breaking out of slumps?

Thoughts and Daydreams #1: Getting Back to Basics

I've been friends with Jessica from Thoughts at One in the Morning for about five years now, and we've done a bunch of different projects together. We planned to create a Facebook group a few months ago called Thoughts and Daydreams, but after a lot of discussion and talking to online friends, we realized there are already so many FB groups and not enough time for everyone to post regularly in multiple groups. From there, the idea of a blog series was born. Each month we'll pick a reading- or writing-related topic and discuss it on our blogs. We also have a few other things up our sleeves, including giveaways and a couple events. We're thinking of eventually opening this up to other bloggers if there's any interest, so if you'd like to participate in the discussions, be sure to let us know in the comments and we'll work out topics and a link-up.

I've been blogging for 5 years now, and my blog (and I) have gone through a lot of changes in that time. The blogging world has grown so much, and while it's a wonderful thing, it also makes it feel sometimes like you're yelling into a void. There's no way everyone could ever visit and read and comment on all the blogs, so it can be easy to pick your favourites and stick with those, which means a lot of great new (and older) blogs go unnoticed, which can lead to bloggers quitting. I know I've had my fair share of moments where I've wondered if there's any point in going on with the blog, but I love it too much to give up. I've made some incredible friends, discovered new authors, and found a place online that feels like home.

There's also the pressure that comes with blogging. I feel incredibly blessed to get the ARCs I do, but it can really start to weigh you down. Over the last couple years, most of the books I've read are ARCs. I keep saying I'm going to read more 'me' books, but then a new batch of Harper titles becomes available on Edelweiss (auto-approval is a blessing and a curse!), or a book I'm excited about becomes available on NetGalley, or Simon & Schuster Canada, who I've had the good fortune to work with the last couple years, will send me a book or two, and I'm back to reading only ARCs.

That's going to change this year, though. If I want to continue blogging and keep my passion for reading, I know I need to make some changes. So I'm getting back to basics.

My plan for getting back to basics
  • Visit and comment on more blogs. Favourite blogs, brand new blogs, blogs friends like, blogs I find on Twitter. I've been horrible about commenting the past year, mostly because my computer is ridiculously slow and it takes forever, but it's something I need to make a priority.
  • Make more connections. Followers and page views are great, and as much as I say the numbers don’t matter, I do like seeing them rise. BUT having readers and making friends is so much more important. I fell out of that last year and I really want to make an effort to meet new people, get to know acquaintances better, and make real connections. I miss feeling like a real part of the community.
  • Read more 'me' books. I still have a ton of review books - I have ARCs left from 2015 and I have a ton of 2016 ARCs already. But I'm going to make an effort to read more of the books that have been sitting on my shelves and Kindle for weeks, months, or even years. I'm hoping the Backlist Books Reading Challenge will help with that.
  • Create new content. In 2015, most of my content was book reviews, plus I started my Wanderlust Wednesday feature, which I plan to keep up this year. I want more, though. More discussion posts, more fun stuff, more personal posts. I'll still post lots of reviews, but I want to mix things up. I'd love to be known as a place where people can come to read honest reviews, but also find fun, original content.
  • Cut back on review books. This is going to be tough, but I'll try my best. I'm only going to accept requests for books that really interest me, and I'll limit how many books I download from Edelweiss and request there and on NetGalley. I'm also going to worry less about publication dates unless an author or publisher has a specific timeline. Reviews help authors any time, so having a book read and reviewed by publication date isn't always a necessity. I think this'll reduce a lot of my stress when it comes to ARCs.
So, that's my plan for getting back to the basics when it comes to reading and blogging. Be sure to stop by Jessica's blog to read her thoughts on getting back to basics!

New Blog Launching Today ~ The Authorteers!

I've teamed up with three of my good friends - Molli Moran, Lilly Avalon, and Jessica Sankiewicz - to create one awesome author blog! Between the four of us, we've published 14 books ranging from young adult to new adult to women's fiction to erotic romance. We decided to put our powers of awesome together to form an author blog called The Authorteers

Click here to check it out!

Meet the Authors:
Molli is a Southern author who doesn't consider her day complete if she hasn't written. She loves coffee and talking fast, things she attributes to being raised by Gilmore Girls. She's a romantic at heart, and brings that to her books, which are usually about quirky characters chasing after their happily ever after. Although content when reading, she can often be found watching and flailing over Doctor Who, cuddling her various pets, or spending time with friends, family, or her girlfriend. Molli loves Oxford commas, country music, Stefan Salvatore, and scarves.
Marie has the best job in the world—one where she gets to make stuff up for a living and shamelessly eavesdrop on everyone around her. She writes happily ever afters while dreaming about the day she’ll have her own epic love story to tell. Most days you can find her writing, reading, fantasizing about traveling the world, listening to U2, watching copious amounts of TV on DVD, or having grand adventures with her nephews and niece.
Lilly Avalon is the author of the RESIST series as well as other erotic romances. She's somewhere in the midst of her twenties and lives mostly in the stories in her head. When she's not enveloped in the worlds she creates, she's out in the real world making stories happen. That or reading other romances. It's a toss-up.
Jessica Sankiewicz is the author of the New Adult novella series, This Night. You can often find her either reading or marathon watching TV on DVD, her favorites being Castle and Veronica Mars. She frequently mismatches her clothes and giggles uncontrollably. She knows almost every Billy Joel song by heart. She collects books and toys, and she has an intense love of cats and lemurs. Jessica decided when she turned 27 that she would remain 27 forever. Currently in the midst of her quarter-life-crisis, she is still takin' names and getting very close to reaching an epiphany.

Hang out with The Authorteers!

We created a Facebook group to hang out with our friends and fans. It'll be full of all sorts of things from news on our books to giveaways and posts on the blog to fun, random posts about anything and everything.

But Ginny can’t pretend any longer. When she finds out she’s going to be alone for the holidays this year, her Christmas spirit goes out the window, along with her luck. Everything that can go wrong does, and Ginny just wants to spend the holidays hiding under the covers...until Dean Riley comes back into her life. With a shared past, old feelings begin to resurface almost immediately, and Ginny thinks Dean might just be the Christmas miracle she’s been waiting for to help her remember why Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year.

Today I'm really excited to be part of the cover reveal for Not Until Tonight, a contemporary new adult novella by one of my online besties, Jessica Sankiewicz. I was one of Jess's beta readers, and I can tell you this is a really cute romance you'll want to add to your TBR!

Not Until Tonight is contemporary new adult and will be released May 26th

Haley has spent the last year going to the bar across the street from her apartment every day. It's the only thing that winds her down at the end of a long day at work. She gets to have a drink and talk to the gorgeous bartender, Skylar. Her little crush on him is starting to drive her crazy. She wants to take their friendship to the next level but she doesn't want to compromise what they already have.

When Skylar asks Haley to pretend to be his girlfriend for one night, she doesn't hesitate to say yes. This is her chance to finally experience what it could be like, even if it's just for one night. But pretending becomes difficult when their real feelings surface and the pull is too strong to resist. And neither one of them prepared for that.

At the end of the night, will they be willing to turn a fake relationship into a real one?

My Writing Process

A big thanks to Molli Moran for asking me to share my writing process! You can read Molli’s writing process post, and she also invited our mutual friend Jessica Sankiewicz to share her writing process, which you can read here.

1) What am I working on?

This isn’t something I’ve told many people, but I’m currently in the process of rewriting my debut novel, Blue Sky Days. That book was definitely a labour of love for me; I wrote it when I was 20, then about 7 years later decided I wanted it to be my debut novel, so I pulled it out and rewrote it. My life experiences and writing experience helped me fix all the issues I had with it originally (mainly the fact it was only about 40,000 words and I knew that wasn’t long enough).

I’m extremely proud of that book for a variety of reasons, but over the last year or so there have been things I wished I could add or change. I didn’t feel like Emma and Nicholas’s story was complete. Now I’m going with the ‘third time’s the charm’ theory and I’m planning to relaunch the book in June. The story has a cancer storyline, and since this year is the 20th anniversary of my dad’s death from leukemia, I’ll be doing the relaunch around that time with a big book blitz and a portion of proceeds from the book going to the Canadian Cancer Society. I’ll be talking more about that and having sign-ups soon, so keep an eye on the blog!

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Well, I suppose I could start with the fact my readers never know what to expect, since I’ve written young adult, new adult, and adult books. All my books are basically the same genre - contemporary - but the age ranges hop around. I also write books that are pretty heavy on the feels, and those feels are rooted in real life issues. I didn’t set out to write books that were ‘different’ or that packed in life lessons/messages, but several readers have told me they love how I’m not afraid to shy away from issues like cancer, depression, grief, bullying, underage drinking, sex, etc. I’m glad people have been able to connect to my stories and see themselves or people they know in my characters.

I also have a few books with a very strong emphasis on healthy female friendships, which is something I love reading and writing about since there’s a lot of portrayals of friendship that concentrate on cattiness, backstabbing, etc.

3) Why do I write what I do?

I love reading contemporary in every age range, so I guess it’s just natural for me to write contemporary, too. I love stories that explore real emotions and real issues, as well as love in its many forms - between lovers, friends, family, etc.

4) How does your writing process work?
My writing process is different for each book. Sometimes I start with a tiny germ of an idea, sometimes it’s a character, sometimes it’s the book's title or a specific scene, and sometimes it’s this lightning-strike feeling of having my brain flooded with ideas. Once I have an idea, I open a document with my characters’ names, appearances, and main personality traits/facts about them, and then I write out whatever ideas I have for plot and dialogue. Then I just start writing. I refer to and add to my notes, but I don’t have an ‘outline’ per se, since my characters tend to take over and the story almost always takes a different direction than what I originally thought.

So, that's a look into my writing process. If you're a writer, what is your process like? Are you a plotter or a pantser? Do you have any writing quirks/habits?
