Book Review: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
Book #1 in the All Souls Trilogy
Published: February 8th 2011
Publisher: Viking Adult
579 pages (hardcover)
Genre: Paranormal romance
Warning: May include spoilers
{Amazon  ||  GoodReads}

Synopsis: Deep in the heart of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, scholar Diana Bishop requests a manuscript called Ashmole 782 in the course of her research. Coming from an old and distinguished lineage of witches, Diana senses that the ancient book might be bound up with magic – but she herself wants nothing to do with sorcery; and after making a few notes on its curious images, she banishes it quickly back to the stacks. But what she doesn’t know is that the old alchemical text has been lost for centuries, and its sudden appearance has set a fantastical underworld stirring. Soon, a distracting horde of daemons, witches, and vampires descends upon the Bodleian’s reading rooms. One of these creatures is Matthew Clairmont, an enigmatic and eminent geneticist, practitioner of yoga, and wine connoisseur – and also a vampire with a keen interest in Ashmole 782.

What I thought of A Discovery of Witches:
This review wasn't easy to write. I started reading this book at the beginning of August, only had it for a week on loan from the library, and wasn’t able to finish it in that week. I wrote down my thoughts right away so that I wouldn’t forget anything when I got the book back:

It was really well-written and there were parts where the style was beautiful and almost poetic, but it was just way too long. This book is almost 600 pages and I felt like I waited the first half of the book for something - anything - to happen, and then even when stuff started happening, there was so much filler in between that it felt like I was still actually waiting for something to happen. The concept was good - different, and interesting - but in my opinion, the author failed at the execution. It was overly detailed - at one point (about a dozen times after she'd said it), I felt like counting how many times she mentioned Matthew's 'cold, white fingers', and I don't think we needed to know every single detail about every room she entered, down to the furniture and colour of the walls, or a detailed description of every move she made and thought she had. If the author had taken everything interesting that happened and condensed it into a book that was 200-300 pages, I might very well have given it 5 stars. From where I ended it (page 453), I would have given it 3 stars.

I got the book back on August 24th and read the remaining 126 pages that night. It was starting to get interesting when I had to return it, and it did get better in the last 126 pages - so much so that I’m anxious for the next book in the trilogy. If I were basing the review on the latter part of the book, I’d give it 4 stars.

I loved the characters – the main ones and the minor ones. That’s one thing about a super-long book, you get time to really know the characters and see them develop. I really liked the relationship between Diana and Matthew, and I loved Matthew (a vampire), even though he was bossy and controlling – old habits die hard when you’re as ancient as he is (I won’t say how old he is because I enjoyed finding that out on my own, and I’m sure others will, too). I love the way he takes care of Diana and fusses over her. Diana is impulsive and stubborn, which makes Matthew all the more protective. I also love the Bishop house where Diana’s aunts Sarah and Em live. Coolest house ever – that’s all I’ll say about that.

Another of the things I didn’t like was all the parts about history and alchemy. A basic overview would have been interesting, because they are interesting subjects, but she went too in depth and it got confusing and made me wish I was better at skimming.

I'm half-tempted not to even give this book a star rating because it's causing me so much grief trying to decide (yes, I am that invested in books lol). Overall, despite the fact that it was too long and too detailed, I ended up enjoying this book, so...

WWW Wednesdays (12) & Waiting on Wednesday (1)

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading.  All you have to do is answer these 3 questions:

1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you'll read next?

Simple right?  I love to read and love to know what other people are reading!

What are you currently reading?
I'm about to start reading Boys Next Door by Jennifer Echols, and I still have to finish Coffee at Little Angels by Nadine Rose Larter.

What did you recently finish reading?
I just (like a few minutes ago) finished reading Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris.  I'll be posting the review for that tomorrow.  I usually have a few to list but I spent all of last week reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and because it was only a week loan from the library, I didn't have time to finish it (almost 600 pages and I'm the slowest reader ever).  I'm hoping to get it back soon so I can finish it and finish my review.

What do you think you'll read next?
My review requests are piling up.  I have That Day in September by Artie Van Why, which I promised him I would have done before the 10-year anniversary of September 11.  I also have Brightwing by Sullivan Lee, Flame of Surrender by Rhiannon Paille, and a couple of review books coming in the mail, plus a pile of library books.  Oh and did I mention I'm trying to have my own novel ready for publication by September?  Yeah.  There really aren't enough hours in the day!
What are you reading this week?  Have you read any of the books on my list?  Have any suggestions?  I'd love to hear from you!

I've decided to participate in Waiting on Wednesday, which is hosted by Breaking the Spine and is meant to showcase upcoming releases that we're eagerly awaiting.   This week I'm waiting on...

Dutch Me Deadly by Maddy Hunter
Publication date: February 8, 2012

Synopsis: As a travel escort for seniors, Emily Andrew-Miceli has led her feisty Iowa clan all over the world. This time, they’re off to see historic windmills and Dutch art in Holland—if they can ever unplug from their smartphones, that is. Joining them is the class from Bangor, Maine, celebrating their 50th reunion, which is divided by old rivalries. Emily’s hopes for a 100% survival rate on this trip are dashed when an important member of the tour suffers a tragic (and highly suspicious) accident. Then the saucy seniors’ wild night of drug-laced desserts and risqué shows in Amsterdam’s red light district gets even more mysterious when one reunioner—the class bully—goes missing.

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this book!  When I was writing my Top 10 Tuesday post on Monday night, I looked up the order of Maddy's books and discovered Dutch Me Deadly.  I was sure that Norway to Hide, released in 2007, was Maddy's last installment of the series, and apparently so did she - Maddy was nice enough to talk to me briefly today and I discovered that another publisher wanted her to carry on, so she's going to continue the series!  She's even going to see what she can do about getting me an ARC - she is super nice and I was thrilled to chat with her!

WWW Wednesdays: Week 11

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading.  All you have to do is answer these 3 questions:

1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you'll read next?

Simple right?  I love to read and love to know what other people are reading!

What are you currently reading?
I'm reading a few books right now: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, which I got from the library.  I'm about 100 pages in and still waiting for something - anything - to happen.  I'm about ready to give up but everyone that I know who's read it raves about it, so I'm hoping it gets better.  At almost 600 pages, and with being a super slow reader, it's going to take me forever to read so it better be worth it! lol  I'm also reading Coffee at Little Angels by Nadine Rose Larter, a self-published author who contacted me about a review.  I'm not very far into it because I can only read it on my computer and I've only been on the computer for work (and blogging) the last few days, but I'm absolutely loving what I've read so far.

What did you recently finish reading?

What do you think you'll read next?
Well, I have a few books up for review from self-published authors, and I have a ton of library books, as always, so I honestly don't know what I'm going to read next.  It's been awhile since I've picked up a book that I'm just dying to read, which is sad - I miss that feeling!

What are you reading this week?  Have you read any of the books on my list?  Have any suggestions?  I'd love to hear from you!

In My Mailbox Week 2

In My Mailbox is weekly meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren.  The idea is to share books you've acquired during the week, whether you've won them, bought them, picked them up at the library, received them for review, whatever.  It's a great way to bring attention to books and authors and share the love!  Since I hardly ever buy books anymore because I can't afford to (*sobs*), I get most of my books from the library.

I still have a few library books from previous trips, but this week I picked up a few more, and received another book for review.

Library books:
Undead and Unworthy (Queen Betsy Book #7) by MaryJanice Davidson {Amazon ||  Good Reads}
 A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness {Amazon || Good Reads}

What books did you buy, borrow, win or receive this week?

Library Loot June 25th - July 2nd

Library Loot is a weekly theme hosted by  Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader.
Since I'm currently scraping by as a freelance writer, I unfortunately can't afford to buy books right now *insert sad face here* which I hate, but luckily I have an awesome library in my city, so until I can have my own personal library filled with wall-to-wall books, the public library's the next best thing.

I'm still way behind on my library books, and was slowly catching up until yesterday when 3 new holds came in - books I've been waiting for for several weeks - ack!  I never seem to get below 10 library books.

Here are this week's books:
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, Born at Midnight by CC Hunter, and What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen, plus the movie Marie Antoinette

I'm looking forward to reading all three of these.  A Discovery of Witches is huge though and since it can't be renewed, I honestly don't know if I'll get around to it this time.  We'll see!  Sarah Dessen is one of my favorite authors, and this is her newest book, so I'm really excited about that one.

What are you reading this week?  What have you read lately that you really enjoyed?  Do you have any suggestions for my library loot picks next week?  I read just about any genre, and I'm always looking for suggestions!
