Music Monday #3 - Inspiration from the dark side

Music is a huge part of my life, and so even though Ramblings of a Daydreamer is technically a book blog, I wanted to dedicate Mondays to music.
If you'd like to join me, grab the graphic and let's talk music on Mondays! Talk about anything music related you want -spotlight a band or singer, a specific song, album, video, soundtrack, a concert you went to, old music, new music, obscure music, whatever you want. Tell us what song is inspiring you this week, or what you've listened to while reading or writing. Make a soundtrack for a favourite book, or tell us a song you associate with a certain character. Share your post in the linky below and then be sure to visit other blogs!

Songs on repeat this week:
Dark Side by Kelly Clarkson
Kiss You Inside Out - Hedley
Drive By - Train
With or Without You - U2
Love This Pain - Lady Antebellum

Pretty much the only time I listen to the radio is when I'm in the kitchen making dinner, or when I happen to wander in and out of the kitchen in the morning while my mum is listening to the radio. The bad thing about that is that I'm not really 'up' on new music. In my late teens and early twenties people used to come to me when they wanted music recommendations, but now I hardly know any new music because I listen to old CDs and music on my computer.

Anyway, the other night I was cooking dinner and the top 20 songs of the week were on. I fell in love with a few songs, and when Kelly Clarkson's 'Dark Side' came on, the lyrics really spoke to me. Not necessarily to me personally, but to the story idea I've been kicking around the last couple of weeks. The character doesn't exactly have a dark side, but because of certain things she's been through in life, she's worried that she does have a dark side, even if it's buried deep. And she also worries about how it might manifest itself, and if the people she loves will still love her. I hadn't really realized that about her until I heard this song and everything fell into place. Isn't that nuts? I haven't even started writing the book yet, and I had this major character revelation because of a song I just happened to hear on the radio. So, thanks Kelly Clarkson, for giving me the first song for the soundtrack of book #4 (BOOK NUMBER FOUR, OMG!).

"There's a place that I know
It's not pretty there and few have ever gone
If I show it to you now
Will it make you run away?

Or will you stay
Even if it hurts
Even if I try to push you out will you return?
And remind me who I really am
Please remind me who I really am

Everybody's got a dark side
Do you love me?
Can you love mine?
Nobody's a picture perfect
But we're worth it
You know that we're worth it
Will you love me?
Even with my dark side?"

~Dark Side by Kelly Clarkson~

If you know me at all, you'll know that I'm obsessed with U2. They're my favourite band, I work them into a conversation whenever possible, and since I can't in good conscience talk music without talking about them, I decided to add a feature at the end of every Music Monday post with a U2 lyric.

Speaking of soundtracks and inspiration, this song was one I listened to a lot while writing book #3.
"Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you"

  1. Very interesting song choice this week. I certainly here you about listening to stuff I already know since I spend most of my time at my PC.

That song is pretty cool and I can certainly thing of characters I have that it would apply to. :) I always love discovering a new song that connects to something I am writing.

Anyway, book four? Wow. I'm almost done my edits for Sealer's Promise and I am outlining two books--Sealer's Quest (which is the sequel) as well as Entwined which is the start of a fairytales meet fantasy type series I want to write.

Hope your week is off to a good start! :)

  3. I love when music brings something to mind and grounds a writing idea! I'm the same--hardly ever listening to the radio. My favorite isn't around anymore, so I miss out on lots of newer music. I've grown to accept this though, and I stick with my favorite artists through their careers, and occasionally find out about newer things. :)

    YAY for book #4!!! <3
