2012 A to Z Blogging Challenge: Nighttime

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. I really struggled with my N post. I started several different posts, but nothing was working. Then this came to me...I don't know what you'd call it, flash fiction maybe? I had fun writing it, so I hope you enjoy reading it!

Nighttime. Everyone’s in bed, my Blackberry is turned off, and it’s my time. This is truly the only time I can say that.

At night, I can slip into a world of my own creation and leave everything else behind - all the distractions, all the demands from other people, all the tempting time wasters like Facebook and Twitter and TV. At night, all those other things fade away and I can be someone else.

As I plant myself in my favorite chair in front of the computer, I can feel a soft breeze from the open window across the room. It carries with it no sounds of traffic or kids from the school across the street, just the rubberband symphony of bullfrogs in the marsh, and the haunting, mournful call of the midnight train passing through town. Those are familiar, soothing sounds, ones that don’t distract or irritate.

When I lay my fingers on the keyboard and begin to type, I know there will be no excuses. Nighttime isn’t the time for excuses, it’s the time to get things done. My brain comes alive, synapses firing away, finding that magic, that high that only artists feel when they’re creating. It’s the best feeling in the world.

While others lie in bed dreaming, I sit awake dreaming. The dreams pour from my mind, through my fingertips, and onto the bright white screen, coming to life.

I write and write until my mind is too tired to continue. Unlike the daytime, the spell isn’t broken by the jarring sound of the phone ringing, or the temptation to see what other people are doing in the rest of the world. It’s a natural ending, one that feels right. I know that when I climb into bed and snuggle under the covers, my characters will continue to speak to me, lulling me to sleep to join the rest of the world in dreams.

Until tomorrow night…

When's your favorite time to write or work?

  1. Nighttime is the right time for some, but for me, my brain functions best during the day. LOL!

  2. What a beautiful description! Nighttime is historically "my time" but after a hard day at work, it is hard to stay awake and alert long enough to write :( I guess I'm getting old!

  3. I love night. There's something magical about it, like it opens up all the possibilities of your imagination. It's my favorite time to write.
