Synopsis: Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.
Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.
Firelight had such a fantastic, unique concept. It was obviously well thought-out, and all the little details about draki were fascinating. Ms Jordan built a whole incredible world and species that kept me interested the entire time.
Jordan has a fresh, engaging writing style, and a real way with words. She gave such great descriptions - of people, surroundings, emotions - that I could picture it all vividly.
I really enjoyed Jacinda and found her very relatable. I got so angry with her mother and sister for not just accepting that the draki was part of her identity, and for wanting to stifle her. I thought there was a great mix of fantasy and real life teenage drama - family issues, trying to fit in at school, raging hormones, mean girls, etc.
I loved the romance between Jacinda and Will. Forbidden romance can either be just plain annoying, or be really sexy and suspenseful. In this case, it was definitely the latter. They each had good reasons to stay away from each other, but they both felt that irresistible connection and pull to one another. They needed each other. Also, the scenes where they kissed were so hot!
The cliffhanger ending has me itching to get my hands on book two in the trilogy, Vanished. I can’t wait to see what happens to Jacinda and her family, as well as Will.
